Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A gold color metal device 1 3/16 inches (3.02cm) in width overall consisting of a winged lion passant guardant facing to the right, his left forepaw raised, holding a sword upright and resting on an open book inscribed "PAX" bendwise.  (Device to be manufactured in pairs, the insignia for left-hand wear reversed except for lettering.)

Symbolism
The Lion of Saint Mark is the ancient symbol of peace through strength and symbolizes NATO affiliation and the northeast Italian historic province of Venetia.  It also represents association of the parent organization with Headquarters, SETAF.

Background

The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 5th Support Command on 14 February 1984.  It was redesignated on 1 November 1989, with description and symbolism revised, for the 5th Theater Army Area Command and personnel assigned to U. S. Army Southern European Task Force.  It was redesignated for United States Army Africa/Southern European Task Force effective 26 January 2012. The insignia was redesignated for US Army Southern European Task Force, Africa 28 January 2021.
